A patent is a grant made by a government to an inventor securing to him or her the exclusive right to make, use and sell, among other rights, the invention for a term of years. While there are several areas of technology suited to patent protection, such as mechanical inventions, electronics, chemical formulae, systems and methods, all patents provide the patentee with the right to exclude all others from using the invention or subject matter taught in the claims of the patent.
Use of patented invention without the authority of the patentee may incur liability for patent infringement. The infringer may be subject to a civil lawsuit in the federal courts of the United States.
